Red Rock State Park

The Red Rock State Park is a popular park in Arizona, thanks to the presence of the red sandstone canyon located just outside Sedona.

The state park was established to conserve the ecosystem around the riparian land along Oak Creek. Additionally, the park is also an educational facility that is accessible to the general public.

With 1.4 miles of Oak Creek, the park’s riparian zone is home to unique plant and animal species, and also to trees such as the Fremont cottonwood, the velvet ash, and the Arizona alder. Oak Creek within the park also supports species such as native fish, frog species, as well as the mud turtle.

Bird watchers will enjoy sighting some of the park’s most common avian species, which include the common black hawk, the wood duck, and the common merganser. In fact, part of the park is a designated bird area for the conservation of these unique bird species. Some of the fun activities at the creek include swimming, picnicking, and nature walks.

Red Rock State Park is home to different wildlife species that include the mule deer, cougars, coyotes, and the river otter. The park’s natural beauty makes it idyllic for solitude and exploration. One of the park’s most amazing attractions is Cathedral Rock.

As of the most-photographed landmarks in the state, Cathedral Rock towers above Arizona’s skyline, as if inviting visitors to explore its unique formation. The rock is accessible using the Cathedral Rock Trail, which is a short but strenuous ascent from the Back O’ Beyond Trailhead to access the top of the rock. The stunning views from the rock, particularly at sunset, make the trip to Red Rock State Park a worthy adventure.

In addition to hiking up Cathedral Rock, the park is also home to a large network of connected loops. These include the Apache Fire Loop, the eagle’s Nest Loop, as well as the Coyote Ridge Trail. Equestrian Trails are also available but are limited to specific sections of the park, with a hitching post close to the Red Rock State Park Visitor Centre.
