Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park

The Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park is a state park located in Nevada. The park’s name is inspired by the presence of the Old Mormon Fort.

This is the first structure to be built at the location, in what would later become the glitzy city that Las Vegas is today.

This is interesting to note because it is the only state park in a city that is home to the first building ever put up in that specific city. The history of the park dates back to the arrival of Mormon missionaries in 1855. In that year, the missionaries settled for one of the sites close to a creek that flowed in the region, creating an oasis in the heart of the desert.

Over the years, the site grew as it attracted more people, including travelers, immigrants, and even gold hunters! People of Spanish Origin called the place’ las Vega’s which translates to ‘the meadows.’ Archaeological research has allowed for the excavation of stone tools, projectile shards, and even ceramic items.

In addition to the historic site and the fort that is home to numerous artifacts, the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park also has a visitor center. Explore the center to learn more about the rich heritage and history of the park.

At the center, there are many exhibits and photographs that capture the impact the missionaries had on the state of Nevada. Read the placards that form a timeline of the museum and puts a lot in perspective. Additionally, the indoor gallery is also home to a wide range of artifacts, which include an apple corer, a cake griddle, and even a wooden doll!

On the other hand, the outdoor exhibit is a perfect setting for outdoor lovers. From the rustic ranch house to the reconstruction of the soldier’s living quarters, and even the freight wagon from the mid-19th century, there is so much to marvel at.

Lastly, make sure you check out the ‘Garden in the Desert’ to learn more about the crops that early settlers grew.
