The museum was first opened in 2005 when it served as the Atomic Testing Museum, but it has since been designated as a national museum, one of 37 others across the country. Visitors interested in the Atomic Age are excited to learn that they are right at the heart of it in Nevada. With more than 11,000 artifacts, this museum not only tells the story of the iconic test site, it also goes back in time to share the history of the country’s nuclear program and the effect it had on the Vegas community.

History has it that in the ’50s, right around the time when the test site was set up, Las Vegas’ population started to increase rapidly. This was attributed to the increasing number of people who wanted to be as close as possible to where all the action, atomically-speaking, was.

While many visitors are drawn to the museum by the morbid pull of the atomic age, it is important to mention that the museum also celebrates engineering feats that made the country one of the most powerful in that era. You will also have the opportunity to see photographs and videos taken during the testing period.
