Mather Point

Mather Point within the Grand Canyon National Park is one of the most popular viewpoints on the South Rim. Part of the reason for this is the point’s ease of access from the entrance, as well as its proximity to the Grand Canyon Visitor Center.

For many visitors visiting the South Rim, this is the quintessential stopover.

Mather Point, Sunrise & Sunset Overlook, Grand Canyon National Park

Fondly referred to as the ‘True Grand Canyon,’ Mather Point is loved for its sweeping views of the canyon. This point was named after Stephen Mather, who was one of the key figures behind the establishment of the Grand Canyon National Park.

The expansive viewpoint features two railed overlooks that stand atop jutted rocks. These narrow overlooks, in addition to the numerous lookouts nearby, provide ample space for visitors to soak in the canyon’s natural views.

The panorama of this landscape extends to the southern part of the Colorado River, taking in sights of Bright Angel Trail, the South Kaibab Trail, and portions of the Tonto Trail. Further west, you can access the Rim Trail that leads to Yavapai Point. This trail is popular with hikers who would like to experience the natural outdoors beyond the scenic views from the viewpoints.

Thousands of feet below lies the Phantom Ranch, which has a rich history that can be traced back to 1050 and is fascinating to view its expanse that cuts across the Colorado River. The ranch is a unique attraction within the Grand Canyon as it provides respite from the rugged terrain above. Interested travelers may make a booking to secure a spot on the waiting list and enjoy the experience of a lifetime.

Standing at Mather Point, visitors also get the chance to gaze at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon that stretches for more than ten miles across. The contrast between the canyon’s vibrant red hues and the skies on a clear day make this viewpoint popular for landscape photography.

Exploring Mather Point would be incomplete without stopping by the nearby Visitor Centre. The center’s use of interpretive displays and educational material makes it an ideal option for the whole family.
