Hermit Trail

The Hermit Trail is a popular hiking trail located on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park.

The trail allows hikers to access this rich historic area in the canyon, with some of the most stunning views of the region’s vistas.

The trail is a strenuous hike that spans 18.6 miles for a round-trip and is far more difficult that the popular Bright Angel Trail. As a result, this trail is best suited for experienced hikers who are up to the challenge.

The Hermit Trail departs from Hermits Rest with sweeping views of the canyon, as hikers take on the steep descent to the river down below. The trail is in good condition for the most part, but hikers are advised to take caution at a couple of washouts along the route.

Hermit Trail offers both the option of day hiking and overnight hiking, with the latter providing an exciting way to explore the canyon. For day hiking, the adventure takes anywhere between five and eight hours for a round trip and ends along the river’s banks. On a good day, it is easy to spot whitewater rafters as they indulge in this adrenaline rush. Hiking back to the trailhead is made easier for day hikers as there is a free shuttle service to Hermits Rest.

On the other hand, overnight hikers can spread the hike over a couple of days, with camping available at designated areas. The Hermit Creek Campsite is located close to the Hermit Trail and a short distance from the Tonto Trail. Backpackers may also camp at the Hermit Rapid camping Site.

Those camping at these sites will have access to the parking space at the trailhead, for which a code is required to access Hermit Road. Visitors are required to key in the code on the keypad to open the gate and follow the route through to Hermits Rest. A dirt road with signage leads to the parking area.

Hermit Trail provides the perfect escape from the South Rim and gives hikers the chance of a lifetime to learn more about its history.
