Goosenecks State Park

Goosenecks State Park is a popular destination that offers splendid views of the entrenched meander, whose appearance resembles goosenecks, hence the name of the park.

The meanders made by the San Juan River are the highlights of a visit to the park.

The park is located close to Mexican Hat, which is a tiny settlement in the southern part of Utah where the San Juan River’s waters flow through the canyon. From the park, visitors can trace the river’s flow as well as see the deep river bends that make up the spectacular geologic features popularly referred to as goosenecks.

In addition to this, the river’s viewpoint is easily accessible. On arrival at the park, simply take the paved road and get a vantage point from where to enjoy the views and take some photographs. These splendid views are a nature lover’s dreams come true.

Look down and see how, more than 1000 feet to the bottom of the canyon, the river’s waters have created the deep gorges. Within the park, the San Juan River cuts across five miles in the canyon before proceeding to join Lake Powell more than 30 miles away.

Goosenecks State Park is a perfect place to go camping for visitors who would like to get the most of the experience. Despite the few facilities at the viewpoint, the site is a wonderful place to stay for the night. Take a spot just a short distance from the edges and watch as the setting sun ushers in dusk against the golden red skies.

The night provides the perfect chance for some night photography. Owing to minimal light pollution at the park, coupled with its remote location, Goosenecks State Park is one of the best places to enjoy star-gazing. Some of the park’s amenities include picnic tables and vault toilets. Campers are advised to carry adequate supplies and camping gear.

Goosenecks State Park is open all year long, but summer can prove tricky as there are no shaded areas, and temperatures can easily soar beyond double digits. Visiting during sunrise and sunset when the weather is a bit milder works for most people.
